Age Concern Profile
Who Are We?
As the National Council on Ageing, Age Concern England brings together national bodies, including charities, professional organisations and representative charities with an interest in ageing and older people. We are one of 400 independent charities in England which form the Age Concern federation and which share the same name, values and objectives.
What Does Age Concern Do?
Age Concern represents all older people in the UK, works with older people and listens to their views, campaigns for change on their behalf and provides a wide range of services and opportunities. Age Concern England takes the lead role within Age Concern in the UK on campaigning, public policy on ageing and older people, fundraising and management of the Age Concern brand. We work across the UK to raise sufficient resources for Age Concern to achieve its purpose.
Our Mission
Our mission is "to promote the well-being of all older people and make later life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience".We want a society where all older people have the right to make decisions about their lives and the power to influence decisions that affect them. We want older people to be recognised for the positive contributions they make to their communities.
We want the diversity of our ageing population to be recognised at every level of our society, in every region and locality; and the differing experiences, to be valued and reflected in the services and products offered to them.
To achieve this, we campaign to end ageism in five key areas:
- Employment
- Health
- Social Care
- Learning
- In the Market Place
Older people are often disadvantaged simply because of their age and such ageism impoverishes not only older people but society as a whole because older peoples skills and experiences are not used.
We campaign for an adequate income in later life for all older people and to end pensioner poverty. Older people have a right to an income that provides an adequate standard of living; and to share in the rising prosperity of the nation. They should not have to choose between food and warmth; they should have the income to stay healthy, sociable and active.
We support other Age Concerns in providing services and products that meet the expressed needs of older people. We ensure that Age Concern is a movement that all older people can relate to; that their views can be heard and acted on, providing benefits and opportunities older people have said they want.
